Gut Check: Surviving the Holidays

By Linton McClain

Pleasant earthy aromas begin to fill the cool and crisp air as we step into the fall season. Nature changes the terrain from vibrant and colorful to more earthy and calm. We begin to notice small changes around us each day. These changes are enough to make us stop, pause, and reflect on our year. Time seems to slow just a bit as the year begins to come to a close. The fall season is often marked by family celebrations, traditions, and reflecting.

We have already made plans to take leave and make our way home to our families. The holiday season is a wonderful time to create lifelong memories over our favorite holiday recipes. As a military member, you know the homecoming experience all too well. It’s no secret why we pack on the pounds over the holiday season. What can you do this holiday season to keep your weight in check?

Gaining Weight

Unless we are deployed and/or regularly physically active, we don’t move enough throughout our daily lives. Adding to the problem, we have more access to food and we don’t make enough time to burn excess calories. As a result, increased food sources help us pack on extra pounds while increasing social interactions centered on eating. Unfortunately, the holidays tend to become a time of the year in which eating happens more often on a subconscious level. For that reason, gaining 10 to 20 lbs over the fall season is not unrealistic.

RELATED: Mission Muscle | No Go: When Exercise Doesn’t Work

Burning calories and monitoring our food intake is the best way to avoid unnecessary weight gain. With that being said, gaining weight does not make you any greater or lesser. Ultimately, your weight should positively impact your health, wellness, and performance. Consider a weight management program if you feel your physical condition negatively affects your performance.

Losing Weight

All weight management programs should be holistic. Furthermore, weight management programs should focus on nutrition and fitness, while helping the mind and the body function better. Knowing that, we have to acknowledge the limitations associated with unnecessary weight gain. Our military branch and job descriptions require a certain level of physical fitness, and our uniforms are meant to be practical for the occasion. With that said, being fit for duty is part of our performance and presentation. Developing practical means of managing weight should be the main goal of any military member. Unnecessary weight can appear in the form of fat or muscle. Don’t worry about the numbers on the scale. Just remember, it’s time to make changes when your weight impacts your performance negatively.

Education

There are many factors to consider when facing a personal struggle with weight. Education is the most important factor. We should understand that food is meant to nourish the body and increase performance. More importantly, we should know where our food comes from and how it is processed in our bodies. Without education, we consume our foods with a focus on taste while disregarding the nutritional value. As a result, eating more or less than required becomes a normal occurrence. Eating can be a fulfilling experience when done to fuel the body. Something different happens to the mind and body when we eat to make our bodies feel better. Consult a health professional if you would like to obtain a personalized diet plan or exercise routine. It’s absolutely worth it.

Enjoy your holidays with family and friends. Believe it or not, you are not going to gain an enormous amount of weight from eating one or two meals. However, you may pack on a few pounds if you find yourself eating a bit extra every day. As you know, food choices vary from family to family. Quite honestly, most families have different holiday traditions. As I mentioned before, you will most likely eat more than you plan. In the end, your exercise program will help balance any extra caloric intake over the holiday season. My advice to you would be that you relax, enjoy yourself, and have a plan to burn calories when you get back to your routine.

No Go: When Exercise Doesn’t Work

By Linton McClain
Personal Trainer, Superior Body Sculpting

You are waking up earlier. You are following a consistent exercise plan. You have asked for help and advice. You are trying to eat better. It’s just not working for you and you are not sure what to do. What should you do when exercise doesn’t work for you?

Believe it or not, it’s common for you to struggle with your fitness routine as a military member. It’s only a matter of “if” and “when” it happens. As a military member you are accustomed to structure and discipline. Time and time again, our ability to function as a unit has set us apart from every military force around the world. With that said, your struggle with fitness begins when you lack the structure and discipline to maintain high standards of fitness.

Accountability

Fitness was, and still is, a very high priority during your weeks at bootcamp. Rigorous exercise was a part of daily living. Additionally, exercise was mandated and often enforced as disciplinary action. We struggle with exercise in the military when the daily fitness standards are not enforced. Any person would find less production when transitioning from a stage of extreme accountability to a lesser degree of accountability. Some people thrive when they are being held accountable. Others may thrive from motivation and inspiration. For you it may take a combination of accountability and motivation.

RELATED: Mission Muscle | Creatures of Habit

From experience, we all know that exercise is not strictly enforced on the same level after bootcamp. You have a job and new assignments to complete. Unfortunately, a lowered standard of fitness has significant impact on your ability to maintain a high level of fitness. It’s important to know your limitations, strengths, and abilities. It would be in your best interest to work on your fitness goals with the right type of accountability and motivation. Are you self-motivated? Do you need a person or group to help you focus and stay in shape? Find what works best for you in order to keep yourself on track with your accountability methods. Will your exercise program work with more accountability?

Education and Training

Where did you learn how to exercise? Like most things in life, you probably used “mimicking.” We have come a long way in our lives using this technique. In most situations there simply isn’t enough time to get formal education on every single thing you need to know. Mimicking is necessary in the way we learn, but can be problematic when learning to exercise. Mimicking can be a real problem as damage caused from exercising incorrectly can be irreversible. Permanent damage to the body is highly probable without proper education and training. Proper form and technique also help you to make every repetition and every second count. Your form and technique could be terrible while you may feel you are giving your all and doing your best. This is obviously not a good situation to be in.

RELATED: Mission Muscle | The “RESET” Button

You will be surprised at how small tweaks in form and technique can change the experience and effectiveness of the exercise completely. We get education and training to operate dangerous weapons and machinery. Why don’t we do the same when operating our body at dangerous levels? Without training and education there’s no way to set realistic fitness goals and avoid injury. This is why health professionals such as personal trainers, fitness instructors, and nutritionists are important. Make the investment and gain the proper knowledge to build your body effectively. Will the proper education and training help your fitness progress?

Realistic Goals

You will be in a great position to set realistic goals with accountability and the proper training. We see it in our leadership on a daily basis. How many times have you watched your supervisor set realistic goals and make calculated decisions under pressure? Their training and experience are the difference between theory and reality. You set realistic fitness goals in the same manner. You need proper training to know your body. You need experience and accountability to know how your body reacts under pressure. The only goals you should make are goals in which you have experience. You will find that goals quickly become unrealistic when they originate purely from emotion. There is a simple method to setting realistic goals. Take something you have already tried and do it better. Do you know enough about your body to set realistic goals in fitness?

Maybe your exercise program is not working but it’s important to understand why. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to maintain a proper intensity and focus without accountability, education, and goals. It’s always important to be able to properly assess your situation. A proper assessment will make for a more realistic approach to any situation. Most exercise programs work “if” they are the right program for your goals and your lifestyle. With an accountability partner you can stay on track. You can properly measure your progress with fitness education. You can increase your chances of success with realistic goals while avoiding disappointments.

Mission Muscle | The “RESET” Button

In this month’s edition of Mission Muscle, guest fitness blogger Linton McClain talks about resetting your ‘fitness focus’ after summer.

The “RESET” Button

By Linton McClain
Personal Trainer, Superior Body Sculpting

What was your most memorable part of the summer? Was it spending quality time with family? Going on a vacation? Maybe it was visiting a new city while being stationed overseas. As many of us have been enjoying ourselves, we know that it’s time to get back to business. We may have lost our fitness focus a bit during the summer but we can recover with a little discipline and commitment. This sounds like the perfect time to reset the routine.

Resetting the Work Routine

During the summer season our routine tends to change drastically. Kids are out of school, then they are going back to school. Traffic patterns change. Co-workers are more distracted with balancing life changes. With all that said, your exercise routine suffers as a result of the changes in your schedule and environment. It is difficult to stick to a routine when everything around you seems to be out of balance. On the other hand, when you fix your routine you will notice that everyone and everything in your circle functions better.

RELATED: Mission Muscle | Creatures of Habit

What are some ways you can reset your current routine? Start by writing out your ideal routine and schedule. List all tasks. Next, write out what’s currently happening in your routine and schedule. Being honest with yourself is the key component. Finally, once you have both of these items, start with the first item on both lists and make plans. Learn to be patient with your ability to adjust. You can’t rush change. Enjoy the process and learn from every moment.

Resetting the Training Routine

As you are getting back into your routine you may notice that your body isn’t responding the same way. Exercises and motions don’t feel the same as they once did. Having a good exercise routine works heavily in your favor. Exercise transforms the mind, body, and your ability to perform. Your body reaches it’s peak performance when you are in a well-balanced routine. The body can adapt flawlessly with proper conditioning, exercise, rest, and nutrition. Unfortunately, maintaining a routine without interruption is highly unlikely. Your ability to be realistic about your current conditioning can help or hurt you when trying to start or maintain an exercise routine.

Implementing a “proper” exercise routine can prove to be difficult as an active duty military member. Conditions are constantly changing. Adjustments are increasingly difficult. Inevitably, these times of distraction will affect your strength and stamina. Without a doubt, both strength and stamina deteriorate when you fall off your routine for a few weeks. Knowing that, it would be wise to know if it’s necessary to take a step back in your intensity or approach before you take a step forward. The best exercise routine is not the most difficult one. The best exercise routine is the one that fits your current situation best.

RELATED: Mission Muscle | Super Solider

Every military member needs to be able to pass his or her PFT. Depending on your current situation, you may need to make a few adjustments. This is your chance to hit the “reset”  button to attain passing results. Your fitness test will consist of push-ups, sit-ups, running, and pull-ups. These are functional exercises. With each exercise, proper conditioning is the key. You and I can both agree that these exercises are not practiced throughout your daily routine. You can change that by resetting your routine. Start early enough and your body will adapt properly.

My recommendation is to start training at least three months prior to your PFT. Start with minimal effort and increase the intensity 10% every week. Start off with pushups (knees down). Do your sit-ups while lowering yourself only to a 45 degree angle.   Walk-Run the distance.   Do curl-ups instead of pull-ups. Over time you will notice the muscle development, stamina, and the  strength of your body improving.  Challenge yourself normally after the 5th  week of consistency.  Continue to push yourself a little bit more each consecutive week and you will be amazed at the results.

Timing is Everything

Our environment is ever changing and we are ever evolving to adapt to those changes. Although necessary, adapting can be a tremendous challenge. Sometimes you just need to reset your routine and start fresh. Having a clear mind and a clear focus helps us in the most challenging times and environments. Adapting to change is part of our job as military members. With that said, fitness is a large part of that process. We are able to maintain a presence in some of the harshest environments because of our physical conditioning. Get back to that level of fitness and you will be able to handle the toughest times in your life. Finish the summer and hit the “RESET” button. If you have any questions about fitness please contact me at www.sbsculptme.com. Be safe.
