Kid Approved Advice
Saying goodbye to friends and adjusting to a new place can be very hard. But don’t worry, we’ve got some fun tips to make the move easier!
- Create a Moving Adventure. Be open to new experiences and adventures! Talk to your parents about the things you’ll experience, the places you’ll go, and the people you’ll meet.
- Ask questions. Ask your mom and dad to show you pictures of your new home and new adventures. You can find out things like: Where is it compared to where we are now? Where’s the closest zoo? What activities can I do there? What will the weather be like there? Where will my things go?
- Pack a Treasure Box. Pack a bag with your items for the trip! Maybe it will include some new toys or books. Maybe you can add some treats. Ask your parents to take you shopping for some activities to do on the way to your new home.
- Stay Connected. When you get to your new home, be sure to take pictures and write letters to your friends. They’d love to see your new home. Ask your parents if you can call or send them videos.
- Go exploring! Help your family unpack. Take a parent or guardian and go out and explore your neighborhood. Get ready to meet new friends.

Just for Kids: Your Own PCS Checklist
Moving can be really tough for kids. They have to say goodbye to friends, teachers, and all the things they’re used to.
For military families, moving is often a must, but starting over at a new school and making new friends can be super challenging for children. They don’t get to choose where they’re going or what they leave behind, so giving them as much control as possible can really help.
Here is a PCS Checklist just for kids. Print this out and depending on their age, this may help them feel like they have some input in the move.
One Last Thought
Remember, every move is a new adventure, and with a little bit of time you’ll get settled in and have lots of fun!
